Plant Care:

Planting:

Choose a full sun location that receives at least 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth, preferring rich, organic, and well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Avoid planting black raspberries in the same bed as red raspberries to prevent the cross-transmission of dormant viral diseases.

Watering:

Water newly planted shrubs deeply 1–2 times a week to keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Established plants require consistent moisture during the early summer fruiting phase to ensure plump berries, but they cannot tolerate soggy, waterlogged roots.

Fertilizing:

Apply a balanced, slow-release or organic fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to break dormancy. Avoid over-fertilizing with heavy nitrogen, which can lead to unruly, leafy canes at the expense of fruit production.

Pruning:

Requires a two-step pruning method since it bears fruit on second-year wood (floricanes). In early summer, pinch back the tips of new first-year canes (primocanes) at around 3 feet tall to encourage heavy lateral branching. In late winter or immediately after harvest, cut all dead, two-year-old canes that have finished fruiting entirely down to the ground.

Pest and Disease Control:

Exhibits excellent natural resistance to anthracnose compared to older black raspberry varieties. Monitor for common garden pests like aphids or fruit-loving birds, and use bird netting as the berries ripen to protect your yield. Note that this variety features prominent thorns along its canes.

Winter Care:

Apply a 3-inch layer of organic mulch or wood chips around the root zone in late autumn to insulate the shallow root system from frost heaving. It is exceptionally cold-hardy and easily survives harsh northern winters without structural protection.
